Triangle, Ellipse & the Monster | Morristown Red Series
I moved to Vermont in late 1979. Burlington had been a town of lumber barons, and many elaborate 19th century houses remained intact. I studied the lattice patterns that decorated and protected the spaces beneath their front porches: previously, I thought lattice was just a homespun architectural detail I’d noticed only peripherally. The inventiveness and creativity in some of the patterns these anonymous carpenters had made was astonishing. They were artists. I appropriated several of the designs, and scaled up the dimension of the wood to make two groups of lattice sculptures: “Triangle, Ellipse and the Monster” and “Morristown Red Series”.
