Aggregate

I used aggregate numbers of small units to create scale, rather than producing one large, emblematic image. In Mix, Stir, Pour (White Floor Piece), 1972, and Pastel Stacks, 1973, I poured hundreds of plaster “puddles”, and assembled them on the floor, using a process familiar to many women, that of mixing up liquids in the kitchen, to replace welding, carving or construction. The subsequent work created in that time period, while more volumetric, continued to be composed of multiple small elements to create mass.
